It includes over 32,000 different species. You might know them as daisies or sunflowers. These plants grow almost everywhere on Earth. They live in hot deserts and cold lands. You can find them on every continent except Antarctica.

Most of these plants are small and soft. We call these herbaceous plants. However, some can grow into shrubs, vines, or even trees. Many of them are useful to people. They provide food, garden plants, and medicine.

One special thing about this family is the flower head. Scientists call this a capitulum.

It looks like one single flower. But it is actually a group of many tiny flowers called florets. Some florets are long and look like petals. We call these ray florets. Other small florets sit in the middle. These are called disc florets.

Some plants use a pappus to spread seeds. A pappus is a set of tiny hairs or bristles. It acts like a parachute. This helps the wind carry the seeds to new places. This is how a dandelion spreads its seeds.
