There are about 100 to 120 different species. Most of these plants live in North America. You can find them in open areas like meadows or prairies.

These plants are perennials. This means they live for many years. They grow from woody parts under the ground. Most goldenrod stems grow straight up. Some can grow over one meter tall. Their flowers are usually bright yellow.

Some species even have white flowers. These flowers bloom in late summer and early fall.

Goldenrod is a very important plant for nature. It is a keystone species. This means it helps many other living things survive. Many butterflies and moths use it as a home for their young.

Some bees are specialists. They only visit goldenrod for food.

Some insects live inside the plant. They make a bump called a gall.

Woodpeckers might peck these bumps open to eat the insects inside. Goldenrod seeds can also spread by the wind to new places.
