Cirsium

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Cirsium is a group of plants called plume thistles.

Most of these plants live in Eurasia and North Africa. About 60 species are from North America. They have flowers in colors like purple, pink, rose, yellow, or white. These flowers sit at the ends of stems. Many insects visit them to find food.

Some thistles have sharp spines on their leaves or stems. Some plants have wings. These are parts that grow from the leaf down the stem. The seeds of a Cirsium plant have a pappus. A pappus is a tuft of feathered hairs. These hairs help the wind carry seeds far away.

These plants help many animals. Bees and butterflies love their nectar. The monarch butterfly uses them for food during its long trip. Small birds like finches eat the seeds. Some people even eat these plants as food. In Japan and India, people grow them for food. In Korea, some are used as vegetables. Many people call them weeds, but they are very helpful to nature.
