They belong to a large group of plants. This group has over 100 different species. Many of these plants look like dandelions. However, sow thistles are usually much taller. They also have more than one flower on each stem.

These plants have soft leaves. The leaves hug the stem of the plant. The flowers are bright yellow. They can be about one inch wide. If you cut a stem, a white liquid comes out. This liquid is called latex.

People used to feed these plants to mother pigs. They thought the milky liquid helped make more milk.

Some people think these plants are weeds. They grow very fast and spread easily. Their seeds fly on the wind to new places. But you can also eat them. Young leaves taste like lettuce. In New Zealand, Māori people eat them. They call the plant pūhā. When you cook the leaves, they taste like chard.
