Milkweed is a group of plants called Asclepias.

They are found in Africa and the Americas. There are more than 200 kinds of milkweed.

These plants have a special milky liquid. We call this latex. It comes out if the plant is damaged. This liquid can be toxic to humans. It also helps protect the plant from bugs.

Some insects love to eat milkweed.

The monarch butterfly needs milkweed to grow. Its young larvae eat the leaves. Some milkweeds have high levels of cardenolides. These are natural chemicals that help protect the butterflies from parasites.

Milkweed flowers are very complex.

They use a strange way to spread pollen. Instead of loose grains, pollen is in sacs called pollinia. When a bee or wasp visits, the sacs stick to the insect. The insect carries them to the next flower.

Seeds grow inside pods.

Each seed has soft, white hairs. The wind catches these hairs. This blows the seeds to new places to grow.
