Most sunflowers grow in North or Central America. The most famous kind is the common sunflower. It is the national flower of Ukraine. Many people grow these plants for food or beauty.

A sunflower head is not just one flower. It is a large disc made of many tiny flowers. The small ones in the middle are called disc florets. The bright ones on the outside are called ray florets.

Young sunflowers do something very cool. They move to face the sun. This is called heliotropism. It happens because the stem grows at different speeds. During the day, the stem grows more on the east side. This pushes the flower head toward the west. At night, the stem grows more on the west side. This pushes the head back toward the east. This helps them stay warm and attract insects.
