There are about 70 different species in this group. Most of these plants are native to North and Central America. Only three species live in South America. People grow many types for food or beauty. The common sunflower is a very famous type. It is even the national flower of Ukraine.

A sunflower head looks like one big flower. It is actually a large disc made of tiny flowers. These tiny flowers are called florets. The bright ones on the outside are ray florets. The ones in the center are disc florets. These florets are often arranged in a natural spiral.

This shape helps the plant attract pollinators. Some sunflowers have yellow centers. Others might have maroon or reddish centers. Most ray florets are sterile, which means they do not make seeds.

Young sunflowers do something amazing called heliotropism. This is when the plant heads track the sun.

During the day, the flower head tilts to face the sun. This happens because of how the stem grows. Growth hormones build up on the side away from the light. The stem grows faster on that side. This pushes the flower head toward the sun. At night, the stem grows more on the west side. This pushes the head back to face east. By the time they are mature, they usually stay facing east. This helps them stay warm in the morning sun.

Scientists have studied how these plants grow for a long time. They found that the movement is a continuous process. Even on cloudy days, the plants try to track the light. However, they do not move during long periods of rain. They also need a moving light source to do this. If they are in a greenhouse, they might not move. The plants can even tell different types of light apart. They will bend toward blue light but not red light. This shows how smart their growth can be.

Different species of Helianthus live in many places. Some grow in woodlands or near moist creeks. The whorled sunflower is a special type. It was listed as an endangered species in 2014. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service protects it. This flower faces threats from pine plantations and forestry. These threats are found in Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. Other species, like the Jerusalem artichoke, are used as food. People use them to feed humans, cattle, and poultry.
