Zinnia

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Zinnias are beautiful plants known for their bright colors. They belong to a group called the Asteraceae family. These plants grow in dry grasslands and scrub lands. Their natural home stretches from the Southwestern United States to South America. Mexico is a very important place for them because many species live there.

Most zinnias are annuals, which means they live for one growing season. They can grow as small shrubs or taller plants. Their height usually ranges from 10 to 100 centimeters. Some have upright stems, while others spread out over the ground. Their leaves are often green and grow in pairs along the stem.

The flowers of a zinnia are quite special. They are composite flowers, which means they are made of many tiny parts. There are ray florets that look like petals around the outside. In the middle, there are disk florets. These tiny disk florets might be a different color than the outer petals. As the flower grows, the disk florets mature from the outside toward the center. Each small disk floret has five petals and five stamens. The stamens hold pollen that insects can reach.

There is a clever way these flowers work with nature. Nectar is made at the base of the tiny florets. This sweet liquid attracts long-tongued bees and butterflies. When the petals open, a part called the style grows upward. This pushes the pollen up so insects can find it. Hoverflies often eat the pollen while they visit. As the style grows more, it splits into two branches. These branches have surfaces that are ready to receive more pollen. This helps the plant make seeds for next year.

Humans have studied and grown zinnias for a long time. The name honors a German scientist named Johann Gottfried Zinn. He collected seeds of a species called Zinnia elegans in Mexico. Different types of zinnias appeared in gardens over the years. In 1829, people had scarlet flowers called "Coccinea." By 1858, double-flowered types came from India. These had many rows of petals in colors like rose and orange. Since the 19th century, people have made over 100 different types.

Zinnias are very useful in many different ways. Gardeners love them because they bloom all summer long. They like full sun and well-drained soil. They are also great for attracting hummingbirds to a yard. In the Americas, they can help protect other plants from whiteflies. Some people even find that certain zinnias are edible as a garnish. Scientists have even grown them in space! They bloomed inside the International Space Station. This showed that zinnias can grow even in a weightless environment.
