Common sunflower

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

The common sunflower is a very large plant.

It belongs to the daisy family called Asteraceae. People grow these plants for many different reasons. We harvest the oily seeds to eat as a snack. Farmers also use them to make cooking oil or food for animals. Some people plant them in gardens just to look beautiful.

A sunflower head is actually a group of many tiny flowers. This group is called a pseudanthium. The outer parts look like bright petals. These are called ray flowers. They are often yellow, orange, or even red. The center of the head is full of disk flowers. These small flowers grow into the seeds we eat.

Young sunflowers do something very special with the sun. This movement is called heliotropism. At dawn, the young flower bud faces east. It slowly turns toward the west as the sun moves. At night, the bud turns back to face east again. This happens because of a circadian rhythm. This is an internal clock that stays in sync with the sun. Once the flower is fully mature, it stops moving. The head stays facing east to stay warm for visiting bugs.

The seeds grow in a very clever way. They follow a pattern called Fermat's spiral. Each tiny flower is placed at a specific angle. This angle is about 137.5 degrees. This number is related to the golden ratio. This math helps the seeds pack together very tightly.

A scientist named H. Vogel proposed a model for this in 1979. In a large head, you might see 89 spirals in one direction and 144 in the other.

Sunflowers have a long history with people. Native Americans first grew them in the Americas. Some evidence shows they were grown in Mexico around 2600 BCE. Explorers brought the seeds to Europe in the 16th century. Later, sunflowers became very important in the Russian Empire. In the 1800s, a man named Daniil Bokaryov helped make oil extraction easier. Today, Russia and Ukraine produce over half of the world's sunflower seeds.
