In science, a berry is a very specific kind of fruit.

It grows from a single flower that has one ovary. This ovary is the part of the flower that holds the seeds. As the fruit grows, the entire outer wall of the ovary ripens. This fleshy part is called the pericarp.

Most berries are juicy and have many small seeds inside. They are often round and brightly colored. You might think of grapes or currants as berries. Surprisingly, bananas and even watermelons are also berries!

However, many fruits we call berries in the kitchen are not true berries in science. Strawberries and raspberries are actually aggregate fruits. This means they come from more than one ovary in a single flower.

A true berry has a very organized structure.

The pericarp is divided into three distinct layers. The outer layer is called the exocarp. The middle layer is the mesocarp, which is often the juicy part. The innermost layer is the endocarp. In a berry, this endocarp is soft. This is how you tell a berry apart from a drupe. A drupe, like a peach, has a hard stony pit. That pit is a very tough endocarp. Some scientists say a berry's endocarp must be less than 2 mm thick.

This thickness helps define what a berry really is.

People have studied how to name these fruits for a long time.

The Latin word "bacca" was once used for any small round fruit. In the 1500s, a man named Andrea Caesalpinus studied how flowers and fruits work. Later, in 1751, Carl Linnaeus wrote a famous science textbook. He used eight different terms to describe various fruits. He helped distinguish the berry from the drupe and the pome. In the late 1700s, Joseph Gaertner added even more names. He created the term "pepo" for gourd fruits. This helped scientists group fruits like cucumbers more accurately.

There are many different types of special berries.

Citrus fruits like oranges and lemons are a special kind of berry. Scientists call these hesperidiums because they have thick rinds and juicy segments.

Another type is the pepo, which includes pumpkins and cucumbers. These have a hard outer rind.

Some berries come from an inferior ovary. These are sometimes called epigynous berries. Bananas and blueberries are examples of this type. Even coffee cherries are sometimes called berries or drupes.

It is amazing how many ways a fruit can grow.

Understanding berries helps us see how nature works.

Fleshy fruits likely evolved to help plants spread their seeds. Animals and birds eat the juicy fruit and then move the seeds to new places. Fossils show that early flowering plants had dry fruits instead. Fleshy fruits like berries appeared much later in Earth's history. This happened near the end of the Cretaceous Period.

Today, we see these fruits everywhere in our food. You can find them in sweet snacks or even in vegetables. Next time you eat a tomato, remember it is a botanical berry!
