Most grapes come from a plant called Vitis vinifera. This plant is native to the Mediterranean and Central Asia. People use grapes in many different ways today. You can eat them fresh or dried as raisins, currants, or sultanas. They are also used to make juice, jam, vinegar, and oil.

After fertilization, the small berries start to grow. At first, they produce tartaric acid and then malic acid. These acids give the young fruit a sour taste. Later, the berries reach a stage called véraison. This is a French word for ripening. During véraison, the berries change to darker colors and get bigger.

They also start to produce more sugar.

Humans have been growing grapes for a very long time. The cultivation of grapes began about 8,000 years ago. Most experts say the Middle East is the homeland of grapes. The earliest evidence of wine-making comes from Georgia from 8,000 years ago. An old winery called Areni-1 was found in Armenia. This winery dates back to around 4000BC.

Other big producers include Italy and France. Most grapes, about 71%, are used to make wine. Only 27% are used as fresh fruit. About 2% are used as dried fruit. One very common variety is the Sultana, which is also called Thompson Seedless. It covers at least 3,600 square kilometers of farmland.

It is helpful to know the difference between table grapes and wine grapes. Table grapes are made for eating raw. They are usually large, have thin skins, and are often seedless. Wine grapes are different because they are smaller and have thicker skins. These thick skins are important for the smell of the wine.
