Grape juice

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Grape juice is a sweet and colorful drink made from fruit.

It comes from crushing and blending grapes into a liquid. People enjoy different kinds of juice based on color and flavor. In North America, many people prefer purple juice made from Concord grapes. Others like white grape juice made from Niagara grapes. These are native American grapes. They are a different species from the grapes used for wine in Europe.

Making juice is a careful process with many steps. First, machines harvest the grapes in the fall. The grapes go to a factory within six hours. A rotating drum removes the stems and leaves. Then, the grapes are crushed and heated. Workers use a press to get the juice out. They might use things like rice hulls or wood pulp to help the pressing. Finally, the juice is filtered to remove tiny bits of solid material.

There is an interesting history behind famous grape juice brands. In 1869, a dentist named Thomas Bramwell Welch found a way to stop juice from fermenting. He wanted a non-alcoholic drink for church services in New Jersey. His son, Charles E. Welch, later helped make the drink very popular. Charles started the Welch's Grape Juice Company in 1893 in New York. The company even made a grape jam called "grapelade" for the military during World War I.

Today, making juice involves big numbers and many farms. In 2025, the Welch's cooperative includes 600 farms in the United States. Some juice is sold as a concentrate. This means the water is removed to make it easier to ship. Water is added back later before it is sold to you. Companies also use special ways to keep juice fresh. They might use heat or special filters to keep out tiny germs. This helps the juice stay good in your pantry for many months.

Grape juice is also used in many important traditions. Some groups in the Catholic and Protestant churches use it during special services. In the Jewish faith, grape juice is used for rituals on the Sabbath. Welch's even earned a special certification to make sure their juice is kosher. This means it follows Jewish laws for food. Whether it is for a snack or a holiday, grape juice brings people together. It is a simple fruit treat with a very big story.
