We often call strawberries and raspberries berries. But in science, the word means something else.

A botanical berry is a fleshy fruit. It comes from one single flower. It grows from the ovary of that flower. This fruit has seeds inside the soft part.

Many fruits we eat are real berries. Bananas, tomatoes, and grapes are all berries. Even big watermelons are giant berries!

Some fruits are not real berries. Strawberries and blackberries are called aggregate fruits. They come from many ovaries in one flower. Some plants look like berries but are not. For example, juniper berries are actually cones.

Humans have eaten berries for a long time. We use them for jams, cakes, and pies.
