It is native to Europe, parts of Asia, and North Africa. Now, it can be found almost everywhere. It loves to grow in moist soil. You might even see it growing near old, abandoned buildings. This is because it likes soil with lots of nutrients like nitrogen.

This plant has a very special way of protecting itself.

Most types of nettle have tiny, hollow hairs called trichomes. These hairs act just like small medical needles. When you touch the plant, the tips of these hairs break off. This leaves a sharp point that can poke your skin. Once the hair pokes you, it injects chemicals like histamine and serotonin. These chemicals cause a stinging or burning feeling called contact urticaria. This sensation usually lasts for about ten minutes.

Many living things rely on the nettle to survive.

Several types of butterflies use the leaves to feed their babies. The peacock butterfly and the small tortoiseshell are examples. Their caterpillars eat the leaves to help them grow. Many different types of moths also use the plant for food. Even some moth larvae eat the roots of the plant. It is a very important home for many small creatures.

Humans have used the nettle for a very long time.

Ancient societies used it for food, medicine, and even making cloth. You can cook the leaves to make them safe to eat. Once cooked, they can taste a lot like spinach. People use them to make soup, tea, or even cheese. In the United Kingdom, there is even a world eating championship! Competitors try to eat as many raw leaves as they can in a set time.

Scientists have studied this plant for hundreds of years. Carl Linnaeus gave the plant its official scientific name in 1753. He published this name in a book called Species Plantarum. The name "Urtica" actually comes from a Latin word that means sting. The second part of its name, "dioica," comes from a Greek word. It means "of two houses" because the plants are dioecious. This means there are separate plants for male and female parts.
