It comes from Central and Western Asia. Many people eat it fresh in salads. You can also cook it in soups or curries. Some people freeze it to keep it for later.

Spinach has a special way of growing. It is a dioecious plant. This means some plants have male flowers. Other plants have female flowers. The flowers are small and yellow-green. The wind helps move pollen between them. The flowers turn into small, hard fruit clusters. These clusters hold many seeds.

Spinach is very good for you. It has a lot of vitamin K. It also has vitamin A and vitamin C. Some people think it is full of iron. However, many other vegetables have just as much iron.
