Rattan

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Rattan is a special name for about 600 species of climbing palms. These plants belong to a group called Calamoideae. You can find them in the tropical forests of Asia and Africa. Most of them live in the thick, old-growth forests of Southeast Asia.

Because they climb, scientists often call them lianas. This means they are vine-like plants that scramble over other vegetation. They are very important to the forest and to people too.

How does a rattan plant climb so well? Most rattans use sharp spines on their stems to act like hooks. These hooks help them grab onto other plants as they grow upward. Unlike some other vines, rattans can climb very wide trees using these spines. They do not have branches like a regular tree. They also do not grow wider as they get older. This means a young stem is the same width as an adult stem.

Some rattans can even grow hundreds of meters long!

There are different ways these palms grow in the wild. Some species are solitary, which means they grow as a single stem. Other species are clustering, which means they grow in clumps. A single clump can have up to 50 stems growing together.

This happens through something called suckers, which is similar to how bamboo grows. Clustering plants can be easier to harvest sustainably. This is because they can grow new stems even after some are taken. If you harvest a solitary plant, the whole plant dies.

People have used rattan for a very long time. In Southeast Asia, it is used to make many handicrafts. You might see it in baskets, woven mats, or cordage. It is also used to make beautiful wickerwork furniture.

Rattan canes are one of the most valuable forest products that are not wood. Some people even eat the scaly fruit or the heart of the palm. Most of these products still come from plants harvested in the wild.

There are many different groups, or genera, of rattan. The largest group is called Calamus, which has about 480 species. This group is found all over Asia and even in parts of Australia. Other groups like Korthalsia and Plectocomia are mostly in Southeast Asia. There are also a few types found in Africa, such as Eremospatha.

Today, rattan is under threat. People are cutting down forests, which makes it hard for these plants to survive.
