A liana is a long-stemmed woody vine.

These plants are not a single group of relatives. Instead, liana describes a way that plants grow. They stay rooted in the ground. Then, they climb up trees to find sunlight. Most lianas live in warm, wet tropical forests. Some can also be found in temperate rainforests. You might even see wild grapes or Clematis in temperate areas.

Lianas work by using other plants for support. They climb toward the canopy to reach direct light. This growth can create bridges between trees. Many animals use these paths to move through the forest. Ants and lizards use them to travel. Larger animals like monkeys, lemurs, and sloths also use them. In Madagascar, lemurs use these webs to move easily.

Lianas are not parasitic plants. They do not take nutrients directly from a host tree. However, they do live on the host at its expense. The vines can cause mechanical abrasion or strangulation. This means they can squeeze or rub against the tree. This can make it hard for a tree to grow or reproduce. Trees with lianas are twice as likely to die. Forests without lianas can grow 150% more fruit.

These vines can grow to incredible lengths. In Surinam, a Bauhinia plant grew very long. A researcher named Hawkins noted one Entada plant reached 1.5 km. That is about one mile long!

The longest monocot liana is Calamus manan. This plant grows about 100 meters long. Professor Melchior Treub recorded this in 1883. These numbers show how much these plants can stretch.

Lianas also change how a forest handles wind. They can anchor a weak tree to a strong one. This helps the trees stay upright during storms. But this can also be a danger. If one tree falls, the vines can pull others down. This happens because the plants are connected. Some trees have even evolved ways to shed these vines. They do this to stay healthy and strong.
