A liana is a long, woody vine.

It grows in warm, wet forests. Its roots stay in the soil. The plant climbs up trees to find sunlight.

Lianas act like bridges in the forest. Many animals use them to move. Ants, lizards, and monkeys can travel along them. In Madagascar, lemurs use these vines to move through trees.

Lianas can also change how a forest grows. They are not parasitic. This means they do not take food from other trees. But they do live on them. They can wrap around trees and squeeze them. This is called strangulation. This can make it hard for a tree to grow. Some trees with lianas are more likely to die. Forests without lianas can grow 150% more fruit.

Lianas can be very long. One plant grew for one mile!

They also help trees in the wind. The vines can anchor a weak tree to a strong one. But if one tree falls, the vines might pull others down too.
