A jungle is a place with very thick plants.

These plants grow in a tangled way. This makes it hard for people to walk through. You might even have to cut a path to move.

Jungles often grow in warm, tropical places. They can grow in many different spots. For example, they grow near river banks. They also grow where trees have fallen down. When trees fall, more sunlight reaches the ground. This light helps new plants grow very fast. This creates a thick layer of plants at the bottom. This layer is called the understorey.

In a rainforest, the understorey is often open. This is because the tall trees block the light. But in a jungle, the light helps plants grow thick. Many people used to call all wet forests jungles. Long ago, explorers saw thick plants by rivers. They thought the whole forest was a jungle. Now, many people use the word rainforest instead. This is because rainforests are seen as special places.
