The word comes from Swahili. In Swahili, it means a journey. Many people go to East Africa for a safari. They want to see the "Big Five." These are the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and buffalo.

In the past, people went on safaris to find new places. Some went to hunt animals. In 1836, William Cornwallis Harris made a special way to travel. He would wake up at first light. The group would walk all day. Then they would rest in the afternoon. In the evening, they ate a formal dinner. They told stories while they drank.

Safaris also changed how people dress. Many people wear safari style clothes. This includes khaki clothes and hats called pith helmets. Some people even wear animal prints. Famous writers like Ernest Hemingway wrote stories about these trips. Today, people still use these styles in fashion. Some even use them to design homes and furniture.
