language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A safari is a long journey across land to see or hunt wild animals. Many people travel to East Africa for this experience. They often look for the "Big Five" animals. These special animals are the lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and Cape buffalo.

The word safari comes from the Swahili word for journey. It also comes from the Arabic word safar. This word means a trip or a tour.

In the past, these trips followed a specific way of working. William Cornwallis Harris created a famous style of travel in 1836. He would start the day at first light. The group would spend an energetic day walking. They would take a rest in the afternoon. In the evening, they would have a formal dinner. They would also tell stories while having drinks.

History shows that many people went on these trips for different reasons. Some wanted to find new places or minerals. Others went to hunt animals for their tusks. In the 19th century, new medicine helped people travel deeper into Africa. Quinine was a medicine that helped protect people from malaria. Later, a company called Newland & Tarlton Ltd began making luxury tented safaris.

Safaris have inspired many famous books and movies. Jules Verne wrote about these journeys in 1863. H. Rider Haggard wrote a famous book in 1885. The writer Ernest Hemingway also wrote many stories about his own trips. Many movies also use the safari setting for adventure. Some films are funny, while others are serious adventures.

This way of traveling also changed how people dress. This is often called safari style. It includes khaki clothes and belted jackets. People might also wear pith helmets or hats. Some clothes even use animal skin patterns. Designers like Yves Saint Laurent have used these styles in fashion. Even home decor sometimes uses safari themes with natural materials.
