The Serengeti National Park is a huge area in northern Tanzania.

It sits in the Mara and Simiyu regions. The park is near the border of Kenya. To the north, it connects to the Maasai Mara National Reserve. The name Serengeti might come from a Maasai word. It may mean "the place where the land runs on forever." This describes the vast, open plains. The park is a special place that people work hard to protect.

The land has three main parts. The southern plains are mostly treeless grasslands. These plains have granite rocks called koppies.

These rocks are good spots for predators to watch. The western corridor has more plants and two rivers.

These are the Grumeti and Mbalageti rivers. The northern part has hills and open woodlands. Volcanoes helped shape this whole landscape. They left behind ash that makes the soil special for plants.

History shows how the park became protected. In 1930, part of the area was a game reserve. Major Richard Hingdston suggested making it a national park. He wanted to protect it from growing populations. The park officially became a national park in 1940. A board of trustees was formed in 1948 to manage it. In 1959, a part of the park became the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. This was done to help the Maasai people use the land.

The park is famous for the Great Migration. This is the world's second longest overland trip. Over 1.5 million wildebeest travel in huge herds.

They are joined by 250,000 zebras and many gazelles. The animals move north to find food and water. They must cross rivers like the Mara River. Around 3,000 crocodiles wait in the water for them. The journey is very hard for the animals. Many die from thirst, hunger, or predators.

Many different animals call the Serengeti home. It has the largest lion population in Africa.

You can also find elephants, leopards, and giraffes. There are over 500 types of birds there too. However, the park faces some difficult challenges today. Poaching and growing human populations are big problems. Invasive plants like Siam weed also grow there.
