It is the largest living species of rhinoceros. Only three types of elephant are heavier than it.

This animal has a very large, barrel-shaped body. It also has a huge head on a strong neck. This rhino is very social compared to other rhino species. It lives in groups and interacts with its kind.

Its wide, square mouth is its most special tool. This mouth helps it graze on large amounts of grass. This is why some people call it the square-lipped rhinoceros. The name "white rhino" might actually be a mistake. Some think it came from a mistranslation of a Dutch word for "wide."

This animal has many amazing physical features.

It has two large horns on its snout. These are not made of bone like antlers. Instead, they are made of keratin. Keratin is the same material in your hair and nails.

The rhino's skin is thick and looks like armor. It often turns the color of local mud. Rhinos wallow in mud to protect themselves from the sun. The mud also helps keep biting insects away. Their ears are large and can move on their own. This helps them hear sounds even in thick plants. They also have a very strong sense of smell.

Scientists have studied how these animals changed over time.

The name for the species is Ceratotherium simum. This name was given by John Edward Gray in 1868. It comes from Greek words meaning "horn beast." The second part of the name means "flat-nosed."

Fossils show that these rhinos have a long history. The oldest fossils from this group are 1.8 million years old. They were found at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. Some experts think their long skulls helped them eat short grass. This happened as Africa became much drier over time.

There are two different groups of white rhinos.

The southern white rhino is doing much better. There were about 17,464 of them in the wild in 2023. Most of them live in South Africa.

The northern white rhino is in much more danger. This group is critically endangered and may be extinct in the wild. The last male, named Sudan, died in March 2018.

Now, only two females named Najin and Fatu are left. They live at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.

Scientists are working hard to help these animals survive.

Because there are so few northern rhinos, breeding is very hard. Experts are trying to use stored semen from past males. They hope to use advanced science to help new babies grow.

This might involve a process called artificial insemination. This helps when animals cannot mate on their own. Protecting their homes is also a very important job. Many people work to stop poaching and habitat loss. We want to make sure these giants stay on our planet.
