There are two different species in the genus Loxodonta. The African bush elephant is the largest animal on land.

The African forest elephant is much smaller and lives in forests. Both species have grey skin and very large ears. These ears help them stay cool in the heat. Flapping their ears creates air currents to release body heat.

Sadly, both types are at risk of disappearing forever.

An elephant's trunk is a very special tool. It is a long part of the nose and upper lip. This organ uses between 40,000 and 60,000 muscles to move. Because it is so strong, an elephant can lift 3% of its weight.

They use their trunks to smell, drink, and even snorkel underwater. Both males and females also have tusks made of dentin. These tusks grow throughout their whole lives. They use them to dig for roots or protect themselves.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. Johann Friedrich Blumenbach first described them in 1797. Later, Frédéric Cuvier proposed the name Loxodonta in 1825. Paul Matschie described the forest elephant in 1900 using specimens from Cameroon.

Scientists also found fossils of older elephant species in Africa. Some of these fossils are 7 to 5 million years old. These old bones help us learn how elephants changed over time.

There are many interesting facts about how they live. African bush elephant females can grow to 3.2 meters tall.

Large male bulls can weigh as much as 6,000 kilograms. They are also very active and sleep only about 2 hours a day. Elephants live in families led by an older female called a matriarch. They communicate using low sounds that humans cannot even hear. These sounds help them talk to each other over long distances.

Learning about elephants helps us understand the natural world. Their name, Loxodonta, comes from Greek words for "slanting tooth."

This describes the diamond shape of the enamel on their molar teeth. This shape is different from the rounded teeth of Asian elephants. Today, these animals face hard jobs like losing their homes. They also face threats from the illegal ivory trade. Protecting their habitats is a very important way to help them survive.
