Sivatherium was a huge animal from a long time ago.

It belonged to a group of animals called giraffids. This means it was a relative of the modern giraffe. This animal lived across Africa and Eurasia. It first appeared about 7 million years ago. It lived until about 1 million years ago. Scientists find its fossils to learn about the past.

This animal was very heavy and strong. It was one of the largest ruminants to ever live. A ruminant is an animal that chews its food in a special way.

Some estimates say it weighed about 1,000 kilograms. Other estimates say it was even heavier. This weight might not include its large horns. The males had two pairs of ossicones on their heads. These are bone-like structures. One pair was wide like antlers. The other pair sat above the eyes. Its shoulders were very powerful to lift its heavy skull.

People have studied these fossils for a long time. At first, scientists made a mistake about what it was. They thought it was a link to animals like elephants or rhinos. They thought this because the animal was so robust and heavy. This is called graviportal morphology. This means it had a sturdy body built to carry great weight. Later, scientists learned it was actually a giraffid. They used many different clues to find the truth.

We can learn how it lived by looking at its teeth.

One type, Sivatherium hendeyi, lived in South Africa. Its teeth show it was a mixed feeder. This means it could graze on grass or browse on leaves. Some fossils from Morocco show it ate C3 vegetation. This is a specific type of plant. Some bones also show the animal faced hard times. Droughts, fires, or floods made food hard to find. This caused stress in the animal's growth.

Sivatherium lived in the same world as early humans. In Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, scientists found its bones. These bones are from about 1.35 million years ago. The bones had marks from stone tools. This tells us that archaic humans, like Homo erectus, used them for food. Some people thought ancient art showed this animal. They looked at figurines from Sumer and paintings in the Sahara. However, fossils show the animal was gone before those humans arrived. The art likely shows different animals instead.
