Prolibytherium

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Prolibytherium was a unique animal from a long time ago. It lived in North Africa and Pakistan. This animal lived during the Middle Miocene period. That was about 16.9 to 15.97 million years ago.

It was a type of ungulate. This means it was a hoofed animal. It might have looked like a deer or an okapi.

Scientists find its bones in many places. These bones tell us about its life.

This creature had very special features on its head. These bony bumps are called ossicones. The males and females looked very different from each other. This difference is called sexual dimorphism.

The males had large ossicones. These were shaped like leaves. The females were different. They had slender ossicones that looked like horns. This helped us see how the two sexes lived.

Experts are still working to name this animal correctly. Its place in history is still changing.

One old idea said it was related to Sivatherium. Later, people thought it was a palaeomerycid. Some also called it a climacoceratid. It might even be a basal member of Giraffoidea. Scientists use new bones to find the truth. They want to know exactly how it is related to other animals.

We know where these animals lived from fossil finds. Fossils were found in the Marada Formation of Libya. They were also found in the Vihowa Formation of Pakistan.

Scientists also found them in the Moghara Formation of Egypt. In 2010, a female skull was discovered. This discovery helped experts a lot. It suggested the animal was a climacoceratid. This helped clear up some old questions.

New research continues to change what we know. A study from 2022 brought new news.

It said the animal belongs to its own family. This family is called Prolibytheriidae. This shows how special the animal was. It was not just like other animals. It had its own unique way of living. We learn more every time we study a new bone.
