Prolibytherium

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A long animal lived a long time ago. It lived in North Africa and Pakistan. This was about 16 million years ago.

It looked a bit like a deer or an okapi. This animal had special bumps on its head. These bumps are called ossicones. The males and females looked very different. This is called sexual dimorphism. The males had large, leaf-shaped ossicones. The females had thin, horn-like ossicones.

Scientists find their bones in many places. They find fossils in Libya, Egypt, and Pakistan. Experts are still studying how this animal fits with others. One study says it is a climacoceratid. This is a group of old animals. A new study from 2022 says something else. It says the animal belongs to its own family. We call this family Prolibytheriidae. Scientists keep looking at the bones to learn more.
