They lived in Europe and Asia a long time ago. These animals were ruminants. A ruminant is an animal that chews its food in a special way. They had long legs and were very heavy.

Many of these animals had strange parts on their heads. We call these parts ossicones. They were like horns. Some had two ossicones over their eyes. Others had a third part on the back of their skull. One type, called Triceromeryx, had a Y-shaped part on its head. Another type, Ampelomeryx, had a wide part that looked like eye-shades.

Scientists think these head parts had different uses. Early members of the group may have used them to fight. They had strong muscles to help them. Later species had flatter parts. These might have been for display. This means they used them to show off to others. These animals lived from Spain to China. They were a very successful group.
