It covers parts of the Mara and Arusha regions in Tanzania. Many people call it one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa. This is because it has so many different kinds of life. You can find about 70 types of large mammals living there. There are also around 500 different types of birds.

The land has many different homes for animals, like forests, swamps, and grasslands. Some people say the name comes from a word meaning "endless plains."

One of the most amazing things here is the great migration. This is a massive move of animals that happens every year. It is a circle that starts in the southern Serengeti.

The animals move because they need to find fresh grass to eat. First, about 260,000 zebras move to find food. They are followed by 1.7 million wildebeest and 470,000 gazelles. In February, many wildebeest give birth to 500,000 calves on the short grass plains. As the rains end in May, the herds move toward the Grumeti River. They must eventually cross the Mara River in July or August.

Crocodiles wait in the water during these river crossings.

History shows that the Serengeti has changed over a long time. For a very long time, wildlife moved freely across the plains. In the early 1800s, Maasai people began to move into the area. However, they faced hard times like drought and disease. In the 1880s, many people died from a cholera epidemic. In 1892, smallpox also caused many deaths. Later, the Tanzanian government moved the Maasai near the Ngorongoro Crater. Changes in fires and animal numbers also changed how the plants grew. Today, rabies vaccines for dogs help protect wild animals like the African wild dog.

There are many specific numbers that tell us about this place.

The Serengeti is home to over 3,000 lions. You can also find 1,000 leopards and up to 8,700 spotted hyenas. The area is very large, but it is only 60 percent of its original size now. This is because humans have moved closer to the land. The weather is usually warm and dry. There are two rainy seasons, one from March to May and another in October and November. The land can be very high or very low in different spots.

Even though many animals look similar, they all find a way to live together. They do this by eating different parts of the plants.

For example, wildebeests like to eat short grass. Zebras prefer to eat the taller grass. Even small animals like dik-diks eat the lowest leaves on trees. Giraffes eat the leaves that are much higher up. This way, many different living things can share the same space. It is a very busy and busy place for all kinds of animals.
