Megafauna are the giants of the animal kingdom. The name comes from Greek and Latin words meaning "large animal life." Scientists do not have one single rule to define them. Some use a weight limit, like 44,092 pounds. Others look at how animals fit into their homes. These large animals have a huge impact on nature. They can stop woody plants from growing too thick. This helps to reduce how often wildfires happen. They also help keep the number of smaller animals steady.

Being very large changes how an animal lives. Most megafauna are K-strategists. This means they live a long time. They also grow their populations very slowly. Most large adults have almost no natural predators. This makes them very important to their environment. They help create new soil and move carbon around. If they disappear, the whole system can change. Smaller plants and animals might move in to fill their spots. This can upset the stable chain of nature.

We can learn a lot from the history of these giants. Alfred Russel Wallace used the term in 1876. He called them the "hugest, and fiercest, and strangest forms." Many large mammals lived during the Pleistocene era. They were found in many different places across the globe. However, things changed about 50,000 years ago. Most large mammal species became extinct during this time. This included 80% of all mammals over 440 pounds. Scientists think humans or climate change caused this.

There are different types of megafauna based on what they eat. Megaherbivores are large plant-eaters, like the elephant. Megacarnivores are large meat-eaters, like the lion. Megaomnivores eat both, such as the bear. Some scientists also talk about keystone megafauna. These are animals that many other species depend on. There are also apex megafauna. These are predators at the top of the food chain. They are unlikely to be hunted by other animals.

Large body size has changed over millions of years. After the dinosaurs died out, mammals grew very quickly. They grew to fill the empty spaces in nature. Some animals, like the indricothere, became huge plant-eaters. They used a special way to digest food very fast. This helped them eat much more food. Scientists think cooler temperatures might help animals grow larger. Larger bodies can also help animals stay warm. This shows how closely size and the world are linked.
