Megafauna are very large animals. The name comes from Greek and Latin words. It means "large animal life." Scientists use different rules to define them. Some say they must weigh over 44,092 pounds. Others look at how they live in their homes.

These giants help the world around them. Large plant-eaters, called megaherbivores, eat many plants. This stops woody plants from growing too thick. This can even help stop big wildfires. They also help keep the number of small animals steady.

Many big animals lived long ago. During the Pleistocene, many types lived everywhere. But about 50,000 years ago, most large mammals died out. This is called extinction. This happened to 80% of mammals larger than 440 pounds. Scientists think humans and climate change caused this.

Today, we still see some megafauna. This includes elephants, giraffes, and rhinos. These animals grow slowly and have few babies. This makes it hard for them to recover if their numbers drop.
