These animals are called subfossil lemurs. We call them "subfossil" because their bones are quite new. Most of these lemurs lived within the last 2,000 years. They were much larger than the lemurs we see today. Some species were among the largest primates ever. One giant lemur, Archaeoindris, weighed about 165 kilograms.

These big lemurs were not like modern lemurs. They did not leap through the trees. Instead, they moved in slow ways. Some used suspension, which means they hung from branches. Others walked on the ground.

Their diets were different too. Many ate leaves and hard seeds. Scientists think humans arrived on the island around the time these lemurs disappeared. Hunting by humans may have helped cause their decline. Other factors also played a part. Today, we study their bones to learn how they lived.
