These animals are called dwarf elephants. They came from much larger ancestors. When big animals move to islands, they often change. This is called insular dwarfism. It is a way that animals adapt to new homes. Islands often have less food than mainlands. They also have fewer predators to hunt them. Being small helps these animals survive on small islands.

Many different kinds of dwarf elephants lived in different places. In the Mediterranean Sea, they lived on islands like Sicily and Malta.

Other small elephants lived in places like Indonesia and Japan. Some were very small. The dwarf elephant from Cyprus was only about 3 feet tall at the shoulder. Scientists found many fossils to learn about them. These bones tell us how these amazing animals lived long ago.
