This animal lived a long time ago. It likely died out when humans arrived on the island. This happened about 2,000 years ago. Many other big animals also went extinct then. These included the elephant bird and the Malagasy hippo.

Scientists found many fossils of Voay. These fossils include skulls and bones. The skulls have two bony horns on the back. These horns are part of the squamosal bone. These are parts of the skull.

Voay had a short and deep snout. It also had thick limbs. It was a very big predator. It was the largest predator in Madagascar in recent times.

For a long time, people thought Voay was a type of Nile crocodile. Now, we know it was different. A new study used paleogenomics. This is the study of old DNA. The study shows Voay was a sister group to the Nile crocodile. This means they are close relatives. They split from each other a long time ago.
