Voay was a large crocodile that lived on the island of Madagascar. Its name comes from a Malagasy word for crocodile.

This animal was a very big predator. It was likely the largest predator in Madagascar in recent times. Many fossils of this animal have been found. These include bones called osteoderms and complete skulls.

Scientists found these remains in places like Ambolisatra and Antsirabe.

This crocodile had some very special features. It had two bony horns on the back of its skull. These horns come from the squamosal bone. Its snout was shorter and deeper than a Nile crocodile.

Voay also had thick limbs and a strong body. The osteoderms on its body had tall keels. These bony plates ran along its whole back. Its body was symmetrical on both sides.

People first described Voay in 1872. At first, they thought it was a type of Nile crocodile. Later, some scientists thought it was like a dwarf crocodile. This was because of certain shapes in its skull.

In 2007, it was given its own name, the genus Voay. A new study in 2021 used paleogenomics to learn more. Paleogenomics is the study of very old DNA. This study showed that Voay was a sister group to the Nile crocodile.

Voay lived during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene times. It likely disappeared when humans arrived on Madagascar about 2,000 years ago. This was part of a time when many big animals went extinct. These animals included the elephant bird and the Malagasy hippo.

Some Nile crocodiles were found in Madagascar that are 7,500 years old. This means they lived at the same time as Voay. They may have competed for the same food and space.

Thinking about Voay helps us see how animals change. Even if two animals look alike, they might not be close relatives. This can happen through convergent evolution. This is when different animals develop similar traits.

Voay's similarities to the dwarf crocodile were likely just like this. It is a great example of how scientists use bones and DNA to solve mysteries. We can learn so much about the past from these old remains.
