Trophy hunting is a way people hunt for sport.

Instead of hunting for food, people seek specific animals called "game." These are usually mature males with impressive features. A hunter might look for large horns, antlers, or thick furs. After the hunt, a professional called a taxidermist prepares parts of the animal. Most people keep the head, hide, tusks, or horns. These items are often displayed in special trophy rooms or gun rooms.

This practice has a very long history in many places. In Africa, people have practiced trophy hunting for many centuries. In the early 1900s, famous explorers like Frederick Selous and Samuel Baker collected animals for museums. President Theodore Roosevelt and his son Kermit also went on famous safaris. Later, the first game ranches began appearing in Africa during the 1960s. By the year 2000, South Africa had about 7,000 game farms. These farms cover roughly 16 million hectares of land.

People have very different ideas about whether trophy hunting is good. Some supporters say it helps protect nature through conservation. In North America, the Boone & Crockett Club says hunting mature males helps species recover. They believe selecting older animals helps keep populations healthy. In the United States, the Pittman Robertson Act uses hunting money to manage wildlife. This money helps expand natural habitats and protect wild spaces. President Roosevelt used his power to create many national parks and forests.

In other parts of the world, hunting supports local communities. Pakistan uses a special program to help people living near wildlife. The Chitral Conservation Hunting Program started in 1983 to protect the Markhor. This program gives 80% of license fees to local indigenous communities. Because of this, the Markhor population grew from 1,500 to 4,000 animals. Some people also use game auctions to raise money for wildlife. In South Africa, these auctions help support the huge tourism industry.

However, trophy hunting also faces many rules and strong criticisms. Some people dislike "canned hunting," where animals are bred just to be shot. This is seen as unfair because it lacks a "fair chase." Other critics worry about hunting animals that are endangered. In the United States, some people hunt cougars, but California has banned it. Some countries like Kenya and Malawi have banned trophy hunting entirely. Laws often limit which animals can be hunted and when.
