Herbaceous plant

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Have you ever noticed how some plants feel soft and green? These are called herbaceous plants. They are very different from trees or shrubs. Trees have woody stems that stay alive for a long time. Herbaceous plants do not have these woody stems above the ground.

Instead, their stems are often soft and succulent. This means they are fleshy and full of moisture. Most of these plants stay low to the ground. They are often seasonal, meaning they grow during certain times of the year.

How does a plant stay soft instead of becoming woody? It all comes down to a material called lignin. Lignin is a complex substance that builds up in cell walls. In many plants, lignin provides strength and makes stems hard. This allows trees to grow very tall. Herbaceous plants lack this woody tissue in their stems. Even the banana plant is considered herbaceous. This is because its stem does not contain true woody tissue.

Scientists and books have different ways to define these plants. The Shorter Oxford English Dictionary says an herb dies back after flowering. Other experts, like those at the Hunt Institute, have different ideas. Some sources say they are herbs if they die back every season. Even orchids like Phalaenopsis are sometimes called herbs. Some people define them by their green and soft texture. There are many ways to group these living things.

There are many different types of herbaceous plants. About 85% of them are perennials, which live for many years. Some are annuals, which make up about 15% of the group. Annuals die completely after one season. Less than 1% are biennials, which live for two years. Examples of perennials include mint, ferns, and most grasses. You might also find carrots or parsnips in the biennial group.

These plants are very important for the Earth. In dry places, they act as a catalyst for dew. Dew is water that comes from the air. Taller plants can produce more dew because they have more surface area. This water is necessary for many living things to survive. In grasslands or deserts, these plants are the basis of the ecosystem. They can even help stop desertification if they are kept healthy.
