These trees grow in many cold places. You can find them in the Northern Hemisphere. They often grow in northern areas.

Birches are pioneer species. This means they are among the first trees to grow on open ground. They often grow quickly after a fire. Some birches are small. Other birches are medium-sized. Some even grow as shrubs.

The bark is easy to spot. It has long, horizontal lines. We call these lines lenticels.

Birch wood is very useful. It has a fine grain and a smooth feel. It is also quite strong. People use it to make birch plywood. This wood is great for making skateboards. It is also used for model aircraft. Some people even use it for popsicle sticks. The wood is light but very stable.
