It is famous for its white bark. This bark peels off in thin flakes. It looks a lot like paper. The tree has slender twigs that hang down. These are called pendulous twigs.

Silver birches are pioneer species. This means they are often the first trees to grow on bare land. They can even grow after a forest fire. They like dry, sandy soil and plenty of light. The tree has triangular leaves. These leaves turn yellow in the autumn. Then, the leaves fall off.

In the summer, the tree makes flowers called catkins. These catkins hold pollen. The wind carries the pollen to help make seeds. The seeds have tiny wings. This helps the wind blow them far away.
