It grows in many parts of Europe. It likes humid places with lots of fog. These trees can live a very long time. Most live for 300 years. One tree lived for over 500 years!

The tree's shape changes based on where it grows. In a forest, it grows very tall. In open spaces, it stays shorter. It becomes wider and has a thicker trunk.

Some leaves stay on the tree during winter. This is called marcescence. This often happens to young trees or hedges.

In the autumn, the tree makes small nuts. These are called beechnuts.
