The American beech is a very tall tree. It grows in the eastern part of North America. This tree has smooth, silver-gray bark. In winter, you can see its long, thin buds. These buds look like small cigars. This makes the tree easy to find in the woods.

The tree has dark green leaves. It also makes small, hard nuts. These nuts grow in a soft, spiny shell. Many animals love these nuts. Birds, foxes, and bears eat them for food. Even people can eat the sweet nuts. You can eat them raw or cook them.

American beech trees like moist soil. They grow well in forests. These trees can grow in the shade. This means they can live under taller trees. The tree can make new trees in two ways. It can drop seeds. It can also grow new trees from its roots. This is called root sprouts.

Some bugs and germs can hurt the tree. A tiny bug can cause beech bark disease. This disease can kill the tree. Other bugs can eat the leaves. Even so, the American beech is a very important part of the forest.
