The river birch is a very special tree. It belongs to the Betulaceae family, which includes alders and hazelnuts. Most birch trees like cold weather, but this one can handle heat. It grows well in USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9. This tree is often found in wet places like swamps. It also loves to grow in floodplains and along stream banks.

This tree has a very interesting way it works to grow. In the fall, the male catkins begin to form. The female catkins appear in early spring when leaves return. The flowers are pollinated by the wind. The fruit is made of many tiny winged seeds. These seeds mature in late spring or early summer. Wind or water carries the seeds to new spots. Water often helps them find the best moist soil.

The bark of the river birch changes as it grows. Young trees have salmon-pink or brown-gray bark. This bark has thin, curling scales that look like paper. As the tree matures, the color turns reddish-brown. The scales become thick plates that press close to the trunk. These plates can even shift to the side. Very old trees have thick bark with deep furrows.
