The paper birch is a medium-sized tree found in northern North America.

This tree is a pioneer species. This means it is often one of the first living things to grow in an area after a disturbance. Such disturbances include wildfires, avalanches, or wind that blows down other trees. Because it is a pioneer, it often grows in large groups of just one kind of tree. It is very good at recovering from fires. The tree can grow back by using its seeds or by growing from the parts of the burned tree.

There is a special way this tree works to spread its life. The paper birch produces many tiny seeds that have small wings. These seeds are very light. The wind carries them to new places to grow. Sometimes, the seeds even blow along the surface of the snow. The tree starts making these seeds when it is 15 years old. It reaches its peak for making seeds between 40 and 70 years of age. In a good year, a single tree might make 2,000 seeds. In a very big year, it might make as many as 10,000 seeds.

Scientists use the name Betula papyrifera to talk about this tree. This name is also called the white birch or canoe birch. The tree has a very interesting look. Its bark is white and peels off in thin, horizontal strips. This peeling bark can show a pinkish or salmon color underneath. The bark stays strong against the weather because it has a high oil content. This oil makes the bark waterproof. This oil also helps the bark catch fire very easily, even if it is wet.

This tree lives in many different places across the north. It is found in all parts of Canada except for Nunavut. It also grows in the far northern United States. You can find it in Alaska and even in parts of New York and Connecticut. Some small groups live high in the mountains of Colorado and New Mexico. These groups are leftovers from the last Ice Age. The tree likes cold weather very much. In cold areas, it can live for more than 100 years. In warmer areas, it might only live for 30 years.

Many animals rely on the paper birch to survive. Moose love to eat the bark during the winter. Even though the bark is hard to digest, it is a very important food source. White-tailed deer eat the leaves in the fall. Small animals like voles and birds like chickadees eat the seeds.

People also use the tree in many ways. The wood can be used for furniture, flooring, or even popsicle sticks. Some Native American groups use the bark to make canoes and boxes. In some places, people even boil the sap to make birch syrup.
