The genus *Quercus* contains approximately 500 species of hardwood trees and shrubs.

These plants belong to the Fagaceae family, which is also known as the beech family. Oaks are considered keystone species in many different ecosystems. This means they are vital to the survival of many other organisms. They inhabit environments ranging from Mediterranean semi-deserts to subtropical rainforests.

Because they support so much life, they are essential to their habitats.

Oaks follow a specific biological process to reproduce each spring. A single oak tree produces both male and female flowers. The male flowers, called staminate flowers, grow in clusters known as catkins. The small female flowers, or pistillate flowers, eventually develop into acorns. An acorn is a type of nut that sits inside a specialized cup called a cupule. Most acorns contain only one seed. The maturation process for an acorn takes between 6 and 18 months. To protect themselves, both the leaves and the acorns contain tannic acid. This substance helps the tree defend against various insects and fungi.

Scientists divide the genus into two major groups based on molecular phylogeny. These are known as the Old World clade and the New World clade.

The Old World clade, or subgenus *Cerris*, includes species found in Eurasia and North Africa. The New World clade, or subgenus *Quercus*, includes species that diversified mainly in the Americas. Within these groups, there are several distinct sections. For example, the *Lobatae* section contains the red oaks of North America. These red oaks have long styles and acorns that take 18 months to mature. In contrast, the *Quercus* section includes white oaks from Europe, Asia, and North America. These white oaks usually have rounded leaf lobes and produce acorns that mature in just one year.

Oaks have a very long evolutionary history. Fossil records include pollen from Austria that dates back to the Paleocene-Eocene boundary, about 55 million years ago.

Other unequivocal records of the genus come from the Middle Eocene. In North America, these fossils are found in Oregon, dating to about 44 million years ago. In Asia, Middle Eocene records have been found in Japan. The modern classification of the genus was shaped by Carl Linnaeus. In 1753, he described 15 species in his work *Species Plantarum*. He chose *Quercus robur*, the pedunculate oak, as the type species for the entire genus.

Oaks are famous for their impressive size and longevity. Many species are large and grow very slowly. The white oak, or *Q. alba*, can live for up to 600 years. Some individual trees are even older. In Bulgaria, a *Q. robur* specimen called the Granit oak is estimated to be 1,637 years old. This makes it the oldest oak in Europe. In the United States, the Wi'aaSal tree is a live oak that is at least 1,000 years old. It may be as old as 2,000 years.

While some oaks are massive, others are quite small. The Japanese evergreen oak, *Q. acuta*, grows as a small tree or a bush.

Humanity has used oak for many practical purposes throughout history. The timber is exceptionally strong and hard. This makes it a preferred material for construction and furniture-making. Oak wood is also used to create barrels for aging alcoholic beverages like whisky and sherry. These barrels impart specific flavors, colors, and aromas to the liquids.

Additionally, the spongy bark of the cork oak is harvested to produce traditional wine bottle corks. In the past, the bark was even used for the process of tanning leather. These various uses demonstrate how deeply oaks are integrated into human industry.

Beyond industry, oaks hold significant cultural and ecological roles. They are symbols of strength and serve as national trees for many countries. In various Indo-European religions, the oak is associated with gods of thunder. Famous individual trees include the Royal Oak in Britain and the Charter Oak in the United States.

Ecologically, they support over 950 species of caterpillars. They also provide habitats for many kinds of gall wasps, which create woody lumps called galls. However, oaks face modern challenges. Almost one third of all oak species are currently threatened with extinction. This is due to habitat loss, invasive pests, and the effects of climate change.
