These animals are often called dassies. They have thick fur and round bodies. Most modern hyraxes live in Africa. Some rock hyraxes also live in the Middle East.

They are herbivorous, which means they eat plants. They live in small family groups. A single male usually defends the home from others. This group lives together in rocky areas or cliffs.

Hyraxes have a special way of staying warm. They cannot control their internal body temperature very well. To fix this, they use a way called behavioral thermoregulation. They do this by basking in the sun. They also huddle together in groups to share heat.

Their feet help them move on steep rocks. They have rubbery pads with many sweat glands. These pads help them keep a good grip. They also have stumpy toes with hoof-like nails.

Hyraxes have a very interesting history. Long ago, they were much more diverse. Some species were much larger than the ones we see today. One extinct kind was called Titanohyrax ultimus. It was huge and weighed as much as a water buffalo.

Other ancient kinds were as big as a tapir. Many millions of years ago, they were the main plant-eaters in Africa. Over time, other animals moved in and took their places. This pushed hyraxes into the rocky areas they live in now.

There are many specific facts about how they live. A hyrax can live for 9 to 14 years. They have complex stomachs with many chambers. These stomachs help bacteria break down tough plants.

They do not build dens but find holes in rocks. Hyraxes use a special area to go to the bathroom. Their urine dries and builds up over many years. This creates large piles called middens. This dried material is called hyraceum.

Hyraxes are surprising because they are related to elephants. They belong to a group called Paenungulata. This group includes elephants and manatees too.

They share many traits with these much larger animals. For example, their tusks grow from their front teeth. This is just like how elephant tusks grow. They also have flat nails instead of long claws. Even their internal parts are similar to elephants. They even share some ways of having babies. This shows how all these animals are connected.
