They are well-furred and round. Most live on rocky cliffs in Africa. Some also live in the Middle East.

Hyraxes have a special way to stay warm. They cannot control their body heat well. To fix this, they bask in the sun. They also huddle together in groups.

Their bodies have many links to elephants. They share many traits with these big animals. For example, they have flat nails. They also have tusks that grow from their front teeth. This is just like an elephant's tusks.

Hyraxes do not build their own homes. Instead, they find holes in rocks for shelter. They use rubbery pads on their feet to climb. These pads help them grip steep surfaces.

In the past, some hyraxes were much bigger. One kind called Titanohyrax was very large. It weighed as much as a water buffalo.

Today, most hyraxes are small. They live in family groups led by one male.
