People often call them sea cows. They live in warm places like rivers and oceans. There are two main families of sirenians. One family is called Dugongidae. This group includes the dugong. The other family is Trichechidae. This group includes manatees.

These animals are mostly herbivores. This means they eat plants. They use strong lips to pull up seagrass. They can eat 10% to 15% of their body weight every day!

Sirenians have very heavy bones. These bones act like ballast. Ballast is a weight used to keep a ship steady. The heavy bones help the animals stay under the water. They also have a streamlined body. This shape helps them move through the water with less drag. When they need to breathe, they hold their nostrils above the surface. Some sirenians even stand on their tails to reach the air.

Many sirenians must move to stay warm. If the water gets too cold, they migrate to warmer spots.
