Gopher

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Pocket gophers are interesting rodents that belong to the family Geomyidae. These small animals live only in North and Central America. They are most famous for digging many tunnels under the ground. People often call them pests because they can damage farms and gardens. They love to eat juicy vegetables like carrots, radishes, and lettuce.

Their digging can leave large areas of bare soil behind. However, their work can also help fertilize the soil with old food.

These animals have a special way of finding and storing food. They use large cheek pouches to carry items back to their homes. These pouches are lined with fur and can even be turned inside out. Gophers are called larder hoarders because they keep large piles of food in their burrows. They build these tunnel systems to stay safe and collect what they eat.

To move through dark tunnels, they use their short, hairy tails to feel around. This helps them when they walk backwards through their paths.

Scientists have studied many different types of gophers over a long time. There are about 41 species found in the Americas. Some belong to the genus Geomys, which are mostly found in the southwestern United States. Other gophers belong to the genus Thomomys, which live in many places like Canada. People have even wondered where the name "gopher" comes from. Some think it relates to the French word for "waffle." This might be because their tunnels look like the holes in a waffle.

There are many specific facts about how a gopher lives. Most gophers have brown fur that matches the color of the soil. A typical gopher weighs around 1 pound and is about 10 inches long. Males are often much larger and can weigh twice as much as females. Most gophers live for one to three years in the wild. However, some species like the genus Geomys can live up to seven years.

Their babies are born blind and stay with parents for 40 days.

Many things in our world remind us of these busy diggers. You might see a gopher in a cartoon, like in Disney's Winnie the Pooh. Some schools even use them as mascots, like the Golden Gophers at the University of Minnesota. Even though they are called Golden Gophers, those are actually ground squirrels. In the wild, gophers must watch out for predators like snakes and hawks. They are solitary animals that prefer to live in their own tunnel systems.
