A mouse is a small rodent with many different kinds.

Most mice have a pointed snout and small, round ears. They also have a long, scaly tail. People often call smaller rodents mice and larger ones rats. This is a common way to name them. Some mice belong to the genus Mus, like the house mouse. Other mice, like the deer mouse, belong to different groups.

Mice are very successful living things on Earth. They can live in almost any kind of environment.

Mice use their senses to stay safe and find food. They are mostly nocturnal, which means they are active at night. Because they have poor eyesight, they rely on hearing. They also use a strong sense of smell to find food. In the wild, they build complex burrows in the ground. These burrows have long entrances and special escape tunnels. For some species, the way they build these tunnels is a genetic trait.

Many people use mice for science and as pets. Scientists use mice in labs to study biology and psychology. Mice are helpful because they are mammals like humans. They share many traits, which is called homology. Scientists have even mapped the mouse genome. This is the complete set of their genes. A mouse has about 2.7 billion base pairs and 20 pairs of chromosomes. They also use knockout mice to study diseases like cancer.

Mice can also be wonderful companion pets. They can be very playful and loving with people. If they are raised from birth, they are often docile. This means they are calm and easy to handle. People keep them in cages with special bedding. It is best to use hardwood pulp like aspen. You should avoid corn husk bedding because it can grow mold. This mold is not good for their feet.

Male mice often have a stronger odor than females.

Throughout history, humans have had many connections to mice. Some people in the past even used mice as food. In ancient Egypt, mothers ate mice to help sick babies. In Victorian Britain, fried mice were used as a folk remedy. Today, mice are used as food for other animals. Snakes, lizards, and birds of prey often eat them. Mice are also a part of many stories and even space history. In 1972, mice orbited the Moon 75 times on Apollo 17.
