Pedetes

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Springhares are special rodents from the family Pedetidae. They live in southern and eastern Africa. These animals belong to a group called the genus Pedetes. Some species live today, but others lived long ago. We know about these old animals from fossils. One fossil species is named Pedetes laetoliensis. This fossil was found in a place called Laetoli.

Most springhares are nocturnal animals. This means they sleep during the day. They stay safe in burrows they dig in the ground. When night comes, they come out to find food. They eat leaves and roots. They also eat small bugs called arthropods.

Springhares have a very interesting way of moving. They usually hop around on their hind legs. They can also make many different sounds. They can grunt or bleat to communicate. They also use a high piping call. This is a contact call to stay in touch.

These rodents have a coat with a secret. Their fur glows under a black light. This glow is called fluorescence. Scientists once thought these animals were in danger. In 1996, the IUCN listed them as vulnerable. Their numbers dropped by 20 percent in ten years. This happened because of hunting and lost habitat.

Today, springhares are doing much better. They are now listed as a species of least concern. They are not in danger of disappearing. You might think of other hopping animals too. Some look like them but are not related. For example, the jerboa and jumping mouse hop similarly. These are examples of how nature finds similar ways to work.
